Sidebar working nicely on Windows Server 2008
I’ve been running with Windows Server 2008 as my primary desktop OS now for a few weeks and one of the things that I had not got to work was Sidebar. I found several blog posts on the net where people claim to have it working but following their steps always resulted in failure.
More specifically running sidebar would show the icon in the system tray but the app would immediately exit. Turns out that I needed on extra step. So, without further delay, here are the steps I did to get sidebar working in Windows Server 2008 x64.
- Copy the Windows Sidebar folder from c:Program Files on a Vista x64 SP1 installation to your Win2k8 install.
- From an administrator console run:
regsvr32 sbdrop.dll
regsvr32 wlsrvc.dll - From that same console run:
sidebar /RegServer - Move the Sidebar registry information from a working Vista SP1 x64 install. You can find it at HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/SideBar.
- Run sidebar!
Here’s a screenie showing it working on my setup.

Windows Server 2008 is the best OS to be released till date from Microsoft’s stable. And the moment I got hold of the RTM build I could not resist installing it on my workstation. Due to the nature of my work I always prefer running a Server OS on my main workstation… I have been running Windows 2003 disguised as XP (with all the themes and stuff) all these days.

Windows Server 2008 has now been released to manufacturing and is already available to both TechNet and MSDN subscribers. The official public launch date is set for February 27 2008 when Microsoft will start with a series of roadshows to amongst other things (Vista SP1) publicize it. For Windows Server 2008, the Core Edition has scenarios where its use is appropriate.
In some cases, the Core Edition is even required like the free version of Hyper-V. For managing the hardware, this throws some curveballs to the Windows administrator. Here is what I have been doing to manage firmware and OEM hardware driver updates.

Is this for Windows Server 2008 64bit or 32bit?
I am running 32bit – would I need to get the registry entries from a 32bit Vista install?
